Have one or more rowing machines that you like to use at home? They are great pieces of equipment and give a smooth, calorie burning workout. You will be able to use a rowing machine young or old and find that it is easy on the joints.

When using a rowing machine keep an eye out for bad form. You can end up exercising with a bent back which causes undue strain on both your back and legs. To row the right way keep your back straight and follow through with a smooth coordinated movement. Start your rowing workouts with no tension and just you moving yourself back and forth on the rowing machine. Start with eight to ten rows per minute for about ten minutes. Then as you get used to it increase gradually until you get to about thirty rows a minute for about thirty minutes. This should give you a fairly high calorie burn and allow you to reach your target heart rate.

You will find that you work up quite a sweat on the rowing machines. They burn an excessive number of calories, up to eight hundred an hour. You should make sure that you stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. Also you may wish to place a fan nearby. You will tend to get overheated fairly quickly when working out and a fan will help to circulate the air. This will help you to workout longer and more effectively.

Also don’t forget to do warm-up and cool-down exercises when working out on your rowing machines. By warming up you will stretch your muscles and prevent spraining something. When you cool off you help to get excess lactic acid out of your muscles from your workout.
